Today I’m excited to share that Border0 has been acquired by Tailscale.
When we started Border0, the goal was simple: make infrastructure access secure without making it painful.
Anyone who has worked in infrastructure knows the problem. Engineers are often forced to juggle multiple VPNs, bastions, static credentials scattered across systems, and tools that were never really designed to work well together.
We believed there had to be a better way.
So we built Border0, a modern approach to Privileged Access Management (PAM), designed specifically for modern engineering teams and focused on making secure access simple and practical.
Over the past few years we’ve been fortunate to see Border0 grow beyond what we initially imagined. Teams around the world now rely on Border0 for secure access to SSH, Kubernetes, databases, web apps, and RDP.
Today marks the beginning of the next chapter.
Why Tailscale
I first met the Tailscale team at RSAC last year to explore whether there might be an opportunity to integrate the two platforms. What stood out was how aligned our philosophies were. Both teams believe infrastructure access should be secure by default, simple to deploy, and powerful enough to give teams real control and visibility without adding operational friction.
As the conversations continued, it became clear that the best version of this wasn’t a partnership. It was to build it together.
The product fit was obvious. Tailscale built the best connectivity platform in the industry, making secure networking simple and reliable. Border0 focused on the application access layer on top of that: controlling who gets access, when they get it, and what happens during those sessions.
Put those pieces together and you get a very natural platform for secure infrastructure access.
What this means for Border0 users
The most important thing to know: nothing changes today.
Border0 will continue operating exactly as it does now. There are no immediate changes required and no migrations planned in the short term.
Over time we'll integrate Border0 more deeply into the Tailscale platform to deliver a unified experience in Tailscale. When that happens, we'll make sure the transition is gradual and straightforward.
Our goal is simple: improve the platform while keeping things stable for the teams that rely on it.
What comes next
The Border0 team is joining Tailscale to help build out their Privilege Access Management capabilities.
Together we’ll be working to integrate Border0’s technology into the Tailscale platform and create a cohesive solution for secure infrastructure access.
This is a natural next step for both companies, and we believe it will allow us to move faster and build something amazing.
A personal note
Building Border0 has been an incredible journey. What started as a small idea born out of personal frustration turned into a product used by many teams around the world, and none of it would have been possible without the support of our customers, community, investors and team.
I’m incredibly proud of what the Border0 team built, and I’m even more excited about what we’ll build next together with Tailscale.
We’re just getting started!
